About Us

A family run nursery focused on growing affordable plants that thrive in your garden

Here at Shield Green Nurseries we are a small family ran business that has been established since 1970. We have 3 generations of growers here, Jim and Marjorie Robinson, Kathleen and Steven Dunn and Graeme Dunn, with a 4th generation in training (Toby and Bobby Dunn).

Jim and Marjorie bought Shield Green in the early 1970s and started growing to trade at Hexham market on a Tuesday and at the now non-existent Green Market in Newcastle City Centre.

When Kathleen and Steven joined the team additional days at Hexham were added to the business and became daily when the Green Market closed down, here developing a reputation for quality, local grown plants alongside dependable service.

As the business has looked for diversification over the last few years the nursery site is continually being developed and becoming more and more accessible to the public. To compliment the growing of our plants and bedding plants we have added more cut flower to our growing schedule. Providing “grown not flown” cut flowers to our product range.

Hexham Market

We have traded at Hexham Market for over 50 years in the traditional shambles market square. We trade from there Tuesday to Saturday throughout the year where we always have a selection of our plants that are looking good. We also have fresh local eggs, wild bird care products, fresh cut flower (some of which is grown at our nursery) and seeds for you to look at.

The Nursery – Plants

The nursery side of our business involves the growing of young plant stock into thriving saleable products to go straight into your garden. Our nursery is situated in Northumberland near the market town of Hexham, (2 miles south) at 513ft above sea level so we pride ourselves in the hardiness of our plants. Our plants range in size of pots with alpines in pots from 9cm up to 1 litre, herbaceous in anything up to 3 litre pots for larger specimens and the same with the shrubs. They are grown in a quality compost with a 12 month slow release fertiliser, so no need to plant straight away.

We have an extensive range of perennials (herbaceous and alpine) and shrubs alongside seasonal bedding and basket plants. This includes perennial favourites such as Lupins and Delphiniums alongside the more unusual plants not often seen at garden centres.

The Nursery – Cut Flowers

We have always grown flowers here at Shield Green, traditional English crops including Sweet Williams, Spray Chrysanthemums and Dahlias have been grown regularly. Over the last few years we have increased our flower growing area considerably and this has resulted in us being able to sell mainly flowers grown by us from March through to November.

We do however sell flowers all year round so do buy in some of the more usual cut flower stems throughout the year.

Flowers are sold direct to members of the public through our market place and from the nursery. However, we are happy to discuss wholesale requests from local florists or DIY wedding customers.

More information can be found on our Cut Flower pages.
